Pros of buying GT3BC-018K 1.5 Heat Pump (Nordyne-Gibson R-22):1. Affordability: R-22 refrigerant is still widely available and less expensive than newer alternatives such as R-410A. This can make the cost of installation and maintenance lower than with a more modern heat pump.
2. Compatibility: Older homes or buildings may have existing R-22 systems, making it easier to replace or repair with an R-22 heat pump like the GT3BC-018K.
3. Reliability: Nordyne-Gibson is a well-known brand that has been producing HVAC equipment for decades. The GT3BC-018K is a reliable and durable option with a reputation for long-term performance.
Cons of buying GT3BC-018K 1.5 Heat Pump (Nordyne-Gibson R-22):1. Environmental Impact: R-22 refrigerant is a hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) that has been identified as a harmful substance to the environment due to its ozone-depleting properties. The production and use of R-22 have been phased out in many countries, and it will only be available for a limited time.
2. Energy Efficiency: R-22 heat pumps are less energy-efficient than newer models that use R-410A refrigerant. This means that the GT3BC-018K may consume more energy to operate, leading to higher utility bills over time.
3. Regulatory Challenges: As R-22 becomes less available, it may become more expensive to obtain. Additionally, some jurisdictions may require homeowners to retrofit their systems to use R-410A or face fines and penalties.
Conclusion:While the GT3BC-018K 1.5 Heat Pump (Nordyne-Gibson R-22) offers some advantages such as affordability and compatibility, it also has significant drawbacks, including environmental impact, energy efficiency, and regulatory challenges. It is essential to consider these factors when deciding whether to purchase an R-22 heat pump.
Recommendation:If you are considering purchasing an R-22 heat pump, it is essential to weigh the pros and cons carefully. If energy efficiency and environmental impact are important to you, it may be worth considering a more modern R-410A heat pump, even if it comes with a higher upfront cost. If you are willing to accept the trade-offs and believe that the benefits of an R-22 heat pump outweigh the drawbacks, the GT3BC-018K could be a suitable option. Ultimately, the best choice will depend on your specific needs and circumstances.
I installed this unit originally and have been the only person to service it. This is ideal for bonus rooms and apartments. It has a small spot where aluminum coil come off, you can see in one picture, with copper tube exposed, but unit is leak free.
Customer decided to replace both systems in house with new higher efficiency r-410. This is a used, but working, r the service valves are shut and unit has enough r-22 refrigerant for itself matching indoor coil air handler. This unit was working well when removed.
